Company Profile

REBATT UK has identified a market for the recycling and refurbishment [re-celling] of dry celled batteries under the Battery & Accumulators Regulation 1991/157/EC and Special Waste Regulations 1991 & 1996.

We are in our second year of trading having re-celled cordless power tool batteries for Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, Leeds Building Agency, Barnsley MBC plus many trade customers. We have recently added BMW/Mini Manufacturing, MG Rover Group and UCI Logistics to our customer profile.  Peugeot Citroen and Toyota have also expressed an interest in power tool battery refurbishment and recycling.

The process involves the opening of the battery case and the removal of the ‘spent’ cells.  The same casing and components are re-used with a new cell pack. Screwed battery packs are opened more easily with an indefinite life span providing the cases are not damaged. Sealed battery packs can be used up to 2-3 times before reaching the full life cycle.

The refurbishment technique can be applied to the majority of plastic battery packs across a different range of products. For example, cordless power tools, portable bar code scanner batteries [HHT], radio controlled battery packs. In the near future laptop computer batteries will be refurbished.

A new cell pack replaces the old one and the cases are re-closed and tested before being supplied back to the customer for re-use at a lower cost, yet still have the same performance and reliability as a new battery. The new cells and re-processing of the battery case carry a 12 month guarantee providing normal use is practised as indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions.

It has been proven that our cells will not affect the working performance of the power tool because REBATT UK only increases the working capacity [Amp hours]

When the sealed battery pack has reached its ‘full life-cycle’ the batteries are re-opened and the cells are removed. The cases are then supplied to plastic recycling companies and the spent cells are transported to steel recycling plants in France. Both materials are re-used as an available resource.

This method is known as the ‘closed loop system’ or ‘landfill diversion’ because the battery casings and spent cells are recycled and not dispatched to landfill sites which have been the case for many years.

Nickel cadmium and nickel metal hydride and lithium-ion cells contain chemically active materials that are hazardous to the environment; therefore they should be disposed of properly through a recognized REBATT collection center or Local Authority recycling transfer station.

Did You Know . . .
The energy used to manufacture primary and secondary battery cells [rechargeable and household batteries] is 50 times greater than the electrical energy they produce when been discharged. More facts>>
